The total area of the city is 150 square kilometers. The number of constantly living population is 250 thousand people. It was the capital of Eastern Donbass. The large enterprises such as - Joint-Stock company " Rostovugol ", Cotton Combine, " Gloria Geens ", factories - "Hydrodrive", " Porcelain Building", Machine-building, Aircraft-repair, two Institutes - Polytechnical and Technological are located in the city.

To the 1918-year the city was referred to Aleksandrovsk. The legend says, that Tsar Peter the Great, seen on a halt has based " a black stone " - coal, coming back from a campaign to Azov.

During German occupation there were underground organizations operated that days which didn't allow aggressors to feel owners of the city. And they severely revenged to patriots. For a place of executions Germans have adapted a deep trunk of mine. Patriots resulted on the specially equipped platform and shot. There has been dumped about 3500 persons in a trunk of mine. The feat of patriots will eternally live in memory of people. In honor of such famous names as Holodova, Klimenko, Evlahova, Meshkova are called streets, prospectuses, a community center. Our fellow countrymen are 29 heroes of the Soviet Union. Many of them are the glorified pilots, graduates of our air-school. Lieutenant Gorovets - a unique pilot - fighter in the world, brought down in one fight eight german bombers.

The history of the world science possesses a name of our fellow countryman - academician Glushkov. Pioneer results of the 50-60 years on theories of digital automatic devices, basic works on automation of management, an artificial intellect, creation of the first Soviet semi-conductor computers is not the full list of his contribution to science.

The city by the right is considered as one of the cultural and sports center of the area. Here there are a city study of local lore Museum, some art galleries, three cinemas. Our pride is a drama theatre "Plast ". Favorite vacation spot of the townspeople is taking place in 30 km from city picturesque coast of the river Don. To services of city dwellers are referred the Palace of Sports, the big track and field athletics arena, stadium " Miner ", Tennis and Aviation Clubs. The glorified sportsmen of Vasily Alekseev such as Marina Logvinenko, David Rigert, Victor Tregubov and many others brought the World popularity to our city. Vasily Alekseev is the strongest person of a planet.

There are not so many winners of the Olympic Games in a city all over the world as they are here in Schakhty, therefore, our unique city in Russia is included in the Ginnes Records Book.
